Velatura (a French word for a type of glazing) is very versatile and appropriate for many stages in these works. We always use it when working on white-primed canvas; it adds so much light and depth. I think of it as adding two layers to your painting before you even really start painting. Once you have built up part of your painting, you can also use it over dry paint to create additional depth, change color tones, and more. It is a very useful tool to prevent paintings from looking flat. Whatever color is chosen should complement or completely contrast the painting, depending on the effect you’re trying to achieve. But either way, it serves to unify a painting in color if allowed to peek through in parts.
This boy was playing shoreside as the sun was setting. He would play haltingly, one moment lost in his imagination, another as if he was awaiting someone promised to come over the horizon by boat. The warmth of the earth encircles him as he looks up once more, as if caught in between his childhood and the coming adulthood. - K
