Week 145

Painting water with watercolor seems so obvious it’s ironic. Pulling up to the work table with a long graphite in hand, the drawing came easily, as liquid as our subject. The colors were insanely vibrant on the first pass, ebbing and flowing through the rocks like foam and back out again.

Typically, we have to use different techniques to achieve layers in oil for our alla prima paintings, but with watercolor, the translucency of each pigment gave a natural edge to the quick nature of these works. The ease and beauty of this piece swept me up into the sea, where I waded in and floated away. - K
